On the occasion of the International Day of the Rights of the Child and the Adolescent, which commemorates the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989, the Tuscany Region and the Istituto degli Innocenti are promoting a day of reflection and dialogue on the current challenges related to the well-being, participation, and opportunities for growth of children and adolescents.

The initiative, entitled “Adolescents in a World on the Edge. What Has Been Done, What Can Be Done”, is part of the activities of the Regional Documentation Centre for Childhood and Adolescence, a key point of reference for knowledge, research, and the dissemination of good practices supporting policies for children and families. The conference aims to provide an open and participatory space for dialogue, where scientific knowledge and first-hand accounts come together to build a shared vision of the rights and well-being of new generations.

Following the institutional greetings by Maria Grazia Giuffrida, Chairwoman of the Istituto degli Innocenti, the first part of the morning - coordinated by Alessandro Salvi, Head of the Welfare and Social Innovation Department of the Tuscany Region - will open with an in-depth focus on the role and functions of the Regional Centre within regional policies for the protection and promotion of the rights of children and adolescents. This session will be led by Sabrina Breschi, General Director of the Istituto degli Innocenti. It will be followed by contributions from Carla Mura, researcher at the Institute who will offer a reinterpretation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Adolescent in light of contemporary social transformations, and from UNICEFFlorence, which will present the international report State of the World’s Children. Enrico Bartolini, researcher at the Institute, will then present the new well-being index developed by the National Centre for Analysis and Documentation for Childhood and Adolescence, a valuable tool for understanding the living conditions and experiences of young people in Italy. The morning will conclude with a round table discussion coordinated by Valentina Ferrucci, researcher at the Institute, entitled “Adolescents Looking at the World, Looking at the Adolescent World: Is a Shared Perspective Possible?”. The discussion will bring together experiences, viewpoints, and expertise from adolescents, professionals, and scholars. Participants will include representatives of the Care Leavers Network of the Agevolando Association; psychologist Sara Alberti (“Teens in Action” Project, Family Centre of the Municipality of Florence); lecturer and activist Marie Moïse; Ayoub Moussaid, President of InMenteItaca; and Professor Vincenzo Scalia of the University of Florence.

The event aims to make a concrete contribution to collective reflection on the state of the rights and well-being of new generations, fostering dialogue among researchers, institutions, the third sector, and young people as key actors, with a view to building a more attentive, inclusive, and listening-oriented society.
